Good News: Local Hiring is Seen on the Rise

Local hiring is seen on the rise again this year, and recruiting budgets are expected to remain the same or increase from last year, according to a recent member survey by the Northeast Human Resources Association (NEHRA).

Sixty-five percent of those polled anticipate the number of full-time employees to increase while 29% expect employee numbers to remain the same. Six percent expect a decrease in employees over the next year.

The majority of those hiring add staff in the exempt (70.4%) and non exempt categories (62.8%), with significantly less hires of temporary and contract workers.

Sixty-one percent expect recruitment budgets to remain the same as last year's while 35 percent expect the recruiting budget to increase and 4 percent foresee a decrease.

Those hiring will overwhelming use internal recruiting staff as a staffing resource, followed by contingency search firms.

Employee referrals (95.4%) and Internet job boards (92.6%) are most often used to identify applicants.  Corporate websites are another often-utilized recruiting tool, followed by print advertising, associations and other nonprofit organizations as well as college recruiting and internships.

In the current marketplace, respondents indicated that finding the best talent is the greatest recruiting challenge (48 percent). Finding diverse talent (12 percent) and have a competitive compensation program (8 percent) also present challenges.
